Northside Happenings August 30 to September 2, 2018

In the Northside this weekend: Enjoy an autobiographical one-man show written by August Wilson and performed by Wali Jamal at New Hazlett Theater, help neighbors build the Baytree Community Garden in Observatory Hill and celebrate community with residents of Charles Street Valley and California-Kirkbride.

Thursday, August 30

2018 Heinz Field Kickoff and Rib Fest

Opening today at noon is a five-day festival of football, games, rides, live music, festival foods and ribs. Admission is free. Tickets for home football games are separate. For more information, check out the website, Facebook event page or contact 412-697-7181.

How I Learned What I Learned at New Hazlett Theater

Wali Jamal stars in this one-man show, an autobiographical play by August Wilson exploring friends, work, racism, music and love. By request of the artist, audience members should be at least 18 years old. Price is the $13 student cost for everyone on Thursday night. Runs through Saturday, September 1. MAKEnight: Medieval! (21+) at the Children’s Museum

From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., enjoy a Medieval-themed MAKEnight and get a chance to solder your own metal crown, learn papermaking skills and dance around a Maypole. Drink beer samples from Brooklyn Brewery and eat ravioli from City Fresh Pasta. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students. More details and ticket information here.

Good Friday at the Andy Warhol Museum

Enjoy half-price admission, extended hours, and a cash bar every Friday night from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Andy Warhol Museum. Current exhibitions include “Adman: Warhol Before Pop,” focusing on Warhol’s first ten years in New York and his commercial illustration work. More information here.

Jeff Jimerson and Airborne at the Rivers Casino Drum Bar

Closing out August’s free, live entertainment at the Drum Bar is Jeff Jimerson and Airborne, from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. More information on the Facebook event page.

Saturday, September 1

Sahaja Meditation at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Allegheny

Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon, learn to reduce stress and balance your health. Everyone is welcome. Learn more via the Pittsburgh Sahaja Meditation Meetup group.

Baytree Community Garden Work Day

Help transform an overgrown vacant lot into a community garden in Observatory Hill. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes and join neighbors from 10 a.m. to noon at 3712 Baytree Street. “Our Baytree Community Garden Will Grow on You.” For the history of the garden project and more information, visit the Observatory Hill, Inc. website.

CommUNITY Day in Charles Street Valley and California-Kirkbride

Charles Street Area Council presents its 2nd Annual CommUNITY Day from 2 to 5 p.m. at the intersection of Charles Street and Izora Street, across from Love Garden. School supplies, food, games and prizes available. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.

Hands-On Needlework at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Allegheny

Various needlework craft activities are available for free to the public noon to 5 p.m. Learn how to knit, crochet or embroider. Use the sewing machine to mend a piece of clothing. Call Lydia to make an appointment: 412-237-1890. More information on the CLP website.
