January Northside Public Safety Council Newsletter

The NSPSC January newsletter and Citizen/Student Police Academy applications.

With winter in full effect, the Northside Public Safety Council (NSPSC) would like to encourage residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their households against severe weather conditions. First and foremost, with frigid temperatures becoming the norm remember to dress in layers and protect yourself from both the cold and severe winds.

We’ve already experienced the first snowfall of the year and the NSPCS would like to remind residents to properly clear and salt their driveways and walkways. Elderly or disabled residents who need assistance removing snow should call 311. In addition, the NSPCS would like to advise that on nights below 20 degrees residents should leave water lines slightly open to prevent water pipes from freezing and potentially bursting. In response to a city-wide ordinance, any domestic pets (cats, dogs, etc.) cannot be left outside any longer than 30 minutes when the outside temperature is below freezing regardless of whatever kind of outdoor shelter they have. Pet owners are encouraged to buy warm-weather gear for their pets as the cold weather becomes more severe. If wandering or lost animals are spotted, NSPSC would like to advise residents to call 311 or Animal Control at 412-255-2036.

For interested parties, both the Student Police Academy (SPA) and Citizen Police Academy (CPA) application windows are now opened. The 10-week SPA course starts on March 14, 2018, and will be on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Pittsburgh Community Day School (6424 Forward Ave). Deadline for submissions to the SPA will be on Friday, March 9.
The 15-week CPA course starts Tuesday, February 6 and will be held Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Squirrel Hill. Deadline for submissions is on Friday, February 2.

The Student Police Academy application can be found here.

The Citizen Police Academy application can be found here.
