Town Talk: Annex Espresso & Goods — Supporting small businesses
“Coming through the Northside since he was a baby” to visit relatives in Fineview, Jason Farahi is not new to the area. In 2008 following college graduation, he found himself living on the Northside to embark on his career and has been on the Northside ever since.

District 1 Update: Work on next year’s budget for City of Pittsburgh begins
Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying these summer days in our Northside neighborhoods. Now that July is upon us, the City of Pittsburgh’s budgeting season is officially underway. City departments are currently submitting their capital and operating budget requests, which will be reviewed by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) over the next few months. Mayor Gainey is expected to release a preliminary budget at the end of September, followed by public hearings and discussions with City Council this fall. I encourage you to visit the City’s Engage page to follow along and stay involved: engage. pittsburghpa.gov/city-pittsburgh-budget-engagements.

When one thinks of landmarks, they likely think of structures that have been around for a long time, burning themselves into the memory of the community they inhabit and serving as an indelible part of that neighborhood for decades.

Town Talk: Amy Stephenson — An authentic Northside treasure
How many of us remember when Federal Street was bustling with hundreds of businesses and trolley cars from Perrysville all the way to the river (yes, prior to the Allegheny Center Mall)? And how many 100-year-old women do you know who continue to design and sew their own dresses? Well, I became acquainted with one remarkable woman — Miss Amy Bell Stephenson who turned 100 this past March — who not only remembers those Federal Street businesses and trolley cars but owned a popular fashion design business on that busy Federal Street. And she is still sewing!

District 19 Update: Work continues on 2025 budget as deadline nears
As we approach the June 30 deadline for finalizing Pennsylvania’s budget, I remain focused on ensuring that every dollar we allocate reflects the values, needs, and priorities of our communities. Budget negotiations are intensifying, and I am committed to advocating for investments that uplift working families, strengthen public health, and build a more equitable economy.

Magisterial District 05-2-42 Update: Lawyer of the Day program paused
Since late 2022, the Lawyer of the Day program has operated in four local Magisterial District Courts (Homewood, Hill District and both Northside courts). The program sought to bring financial support to tenants facing eviction while also, as the name suggests, providing tenants with in-court legal representation on the day of their hearings (think “public defender” but for lower income tenants). This cooperative effort among RentHelpPGH, Neighborhood Legal Services, Ebony Law and Community Justice Project and other partner organizations such as Just Mediation Pittsburgh, has been connecting tenants with legal representatives and resource navigators to assist them in navigating their eviction and very importantly, accessing needed financial assistance to solve the cause of the eviction.
