February 2024 poll results reported

By Sean P. Ray | Managing Editor

February is over and love is dead.

OK, maybe that’s a bit extreme of a statement. But the ending of a month does mean something monumental: the chance to report more results from The Northside Chronicle’s weekly polls!

We kicked things off by asking how many of the 2024 Oscar-nominated movies our readers had seen, as the nominees had just been announced at the time. The answer is not too many, as it turns out!

A total of 50% of respondents said they had seen less than five, while the other 50% said they hadn’t seen any.

Not to worry, dear readers, as I’m right there with you. Out of the 38 nominated films, I only saw one, that being “Godzilla: Minus One,” which is nominated for Best Visual Effects. And I’ll let you know, I’m really rooting for it to win!

Our next question followed in the wake of Groundhog Day. This year, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, so we asked our readers whether they thought the famous rodent would be correct.

There’s a decent amount of confidence in Phil’s prediction, as 25% said “Yes, he always is” and another 25% said “I sure hope so.” However, there is dissent, as 50% said they thought we’ll see more winter.

At time of writing, it’s hard to definitively say, but I think Phil may have been right on the money. Sure we got some snow, but temps have mainly been warm, even if a bit windy.

Valentine’s Day was next, so we asked what our readers’ favorite Valentine’s sweets were. And the results were unanimous!

Garnering 100% of the vote was chocolate-covered strawberries, the perfect combination of candy sweetness and fruity goodness. Personally, this would have been my pick as well.

Finally, our last poll dealt with Super Bowl LVIII, the dynamite match between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, with a bit of Swifty boost thrown in there. The game became the most watched program in American television history, but we wanted to know if our readers caught the big game.

It was a 50/50 split, with 50% saying “Yes, but only part of it” and the other 50% responding with a simple “Nope.” Surprisingly, no one answered that they only watched for Taylor Swift.

And that brings an end to this round of poll results. We’ll be back next month with March’s batch.
