“Think Spring” at a community garden fundraiser at Allegheny City Brewing, celebrate International Women’s Day at Alloy 26 and have brunch with activist and political figure Minou Tavarez Mirabal at Arnold’s Tea. All of this and more this weekend in the Northside.

Thursday, March 7

Northside Public Safety Council Meeting

Head to MCC at 1319 Allegheny Ave., 15233, for the monthly NPSC meeting. This month’s speaker is Martha DeSantis from the Allegheny County Adult Probation office. NPSC meets on the first Thursday of every month. For more information, call NPSC at 412-321-0295 or email [email protected].

Parks Listening Tour at CoLab18 in Nova Place

At community meetings and events throughout th”e city, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy (PPC) will be gathering feedback on what our neighbors like you love about their parks, and what they would love to improve. Meeting starts at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at CoLab18 in Nova Place (100 South Commons) and dinner will be served. Please register so they have an accurate headcount for food. Register here. Think Spring Community Garden Fundraiser at Allegheny City Brewing

Enjoy local brews, games, raffle prizes, & tasty bites from La Palapa Food Truck while learning about the Northside’s newest community garden! 10 percent of the evening’s beer proceeds will be donated to help fund the spring 2019 construction of the East Commons Community Garden at Allegheny Commons Park! Event is from 6 to 9 p.m. More information available here.

Sweaty Already String Band at Bier’s Pub

International Women’s Day at Alloy 26

Join Alloy 26 for our second annual International Women’s Day Celebration. This year’s official IWD theme is #BalanceforBetter, with a focus on building a gender-balanced world. More information, including the full schedule of free programming offered, is available via Facebook.

Sober Social Night at Adda Northside

In true Empath fashion, this will be a night to socialize, hang, connect and of course sip on house-made tasty non-alcoholic mixed drinks! Adda will also have their Espresso bar open! Fun and relaxing atmosphere garnished with the usual Empath vibe. There will be snacks to munch on and the playlist will be just right! The event is FREE with non-alcoholic mixed drinks, espresso, coffee and finger foods for purchase. Everyone is welcome 16+! More information available here.

Annual Proud Haven Meeting

Mark your calendars! March 10th at 2 p.m. Come check our Proud Haven’s new digs at 517 East Ohio Street in the Northside, chat with their board and find out what Proud Haven has been up to and how you can get involved! Proud Haven’s mission is to provide a safe shelter for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) youth experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The Butterfly’s Daughter: Brunch with Minou Tavarez Mirabal at Arnold’s Tea

Saturday, March 9, Prime Stage Theatre is opening In the Time Of the Butterflies, a play based on the real-life story of the teenage Mirabal sisters, code named “the Butterflies,” who sparked a revolution to overthrow dictator Rafael Trujillo’s violent regime in the Dominican Republic in the late 1950s. Take part in an intimate brunch with Minou Tavarez Mirabal, the daughter of Minerva Mirabal, from 10 a.m. to noon. An activist and political figure in her native Dominican Republic, she shares the legacy of her parents and aunts, her published and upcoming books, and her fight against gender-based violence. $25 tickets include a full brunch. Limited seating, tickets must be purchased in advance online by March 7. No door sales. For more information, click here.
