Borussia Dortmund visits the Carnegie Science Center

By Sarah Gross

On Monday July 23, the Carnegie Science Center welcomed two special guests, Mario Götze and Lukasz Piszczek, players from the Borussia Dortmund soccer team. They arrived at 2:30 p.m. and were taken on a tour of both the Highmark Sportsworks building and the Art of the Brick exhibit.

Götze is known internationally for scoring the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup. In Germany he is a national celebrity, but in Pittsburgh, he had room to relax and have fun.

Once inside the Sportsworks building, Götze and Piszczek were given a tour of the games and exhibits that teach children about sports and health. They had fun playing a game that tracks the speed of a swinging a bat, and playing one that teaches kids how to perform CPR. The two athletes also played alongside children for two different hockey games.

After their tour, Götze and Piszczek gave a Borussia Dortmund jersey signed by the whole team to the Carnegie Science Center staff. At 3 p.m., they signed autographs and took photos with fans. Before leaving, the team toured one of the latest Science Center exhibits, the Art of the Brick.
