Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial arrival of summer. It also means Tacos & Tequila at Wigle Whiskey and Barrelhouse, new installations at the Mattress Factory and of course live music in Allegheny West and Deustchtown.

Thursday, May 24

Mason Jar Terrarium Workshop at Modern Cafe

Looking to get crafty this weekend? Pop Craft is hosting a Terrarium Workshop at Modern Cafe from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Using large mason jars an instructor will teach participants how to create a terrarium or mini ecosystem within the mason jars. Pop Craft will provide all necessary tools and equipment. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Placeholder Meet-up at Penn Brewery

The community group, Placeholder his hosting a walk-about around East Deutschtown, starting at Penn Brewery. Members from Placeholder and Community Alliance of Spring Garden & East Deutschtown (CASGED) will be hosting a discussion on neighborhood redevelopment, adaptive reuse and preservation. The walkabout will start at Penn Brewery at 6 p.m. and end at Huszar in Historic Deustchtown. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Blood Orange Pale Ale Release at Southern Tier

Southern Tier Brewing Co., will be hosting a release party for the new Blood Orange Pale Ale from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In part of Southern Tier’s Pittsburgh Brew’d series, brewmaster Justin Schua will join guests for a small Q&A session about the beer, which was brewed with blood orange puree. Drink & Ink at Artist Image Resource

AIR will be hosting the monthly Drink & Ink event with special guest artist Mike Budai. Guests will have a chance to speak with Budai about his artwork along with the opportunity to create their own print. Boxing Night at The Priory

The Grand Hall at The Priory will be hosting a Pro-Am Boxing Night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The fight card will feature 7 amateur fights and 4 professional bouts, with a number of fighters from the Greater Pittsburgh Area. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit The Priory’s event page.

Tim Vitullo at The Park House

Alternative rock artist, Tim Vitullo will be performing at The Park House from 9 p.m. to midnight. The concert is free to attend. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Tacos and Tequila Barrel Festival

In honor of Wigle’s tequila-barrel aged “Al Centro” and “Abajo” whiskeys, Wigle Whiskey Barrelhouse in Spring Garden will be hosting a release party at 5 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to try both the Al Centro and Abajo varietals along with enjoying live music from the Semi-Supervillains. “Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs: South Africa and US” exhibit opening at the Mattress Factory

The Mattress Factory will hold a public reception for the new “Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs: South Africa and US” exhibit. The installation is part of Tavia La Follette’s “Sites of Passage” project which highlights civil rights activism by uniting international artists with American artists. The exhibition will feature the works from four South African artists including Henry Albertus, Asanda Kupa, Mbovu Malinga and Charlie Jansen in addition to three Pittsburgh artists, Chris Ivey, Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson and Alisha Wormsley. Teen Anime Club at Woods Run Library

The Woods Run Library will be hosting a Teen Anime Club from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit the library’s event page.

Her Ladyship at Bier’s Pub

Bier’s Pub in Allegheny West will be hosting alternative-folk band, Her Ladyship from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

 

Sunday, May 27

USS Requin Submarine Memorial Service

Veterans from the USS VI Requin Base will hold a special memorial service aboard the USS Requin (SS 481) docked near the Carnegie Science Center on the Ohio River. In addition, the Marine Color Guard from the Three Rivers Leatherneck Detachment 310 and members from the VFW Post 9199 Honor Guard will be on hand to perform a 21-gun salute. Admission fees to the USS Requin will be waived all day in honor of the ceremony. For more information, visit the Science Center’s event page.
