Plenty of free community events this weekend with green initiatives in Troy Hill and Brighton Heights, not to mention plenty of Mother’s Day events in Allegheny West and Spring Garden

Thursday, May 10

Allegheny Goatscape at ACB

Interested in volunteering with Allegheny Goatscape this summer? Allegheny City Brewing is hosting an information session from 6 to 8 p.m., stop in and learn more about the Northside-based project. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Cat Cafe at Threadbare

Threadbare Cider and Mead along with the Humane Animal Rescue will be hosting a Cat Cafe from 5 to 10 p.m. Guests will be able to adopt any of the cats or just come in and say hello! For more information, visit Threadbare’s event page.

Whiskey in the Water at Wigle Whiskey  and Barrelhouse

Wigle Whiskey and Barrelhouse in Spring Garden is hosting a fundraiser for the Center for Coalfield Justice from 6 to 9 p.m. 9.9 percent of all proceeds from the evening will benefit the CCJ. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

4th Annual Fusion Art Exhibition at Oliver Academy

The 4th annual Fusion Art Exhibition celebrates student art through a variety of mediums. The event is hosted by the Art Voice and will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The goal is to connect and inspire young artists within local communities. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Virtual Reality Gaming at Woods Run Library

The Woods Run Library will be hosting a VR gaming session from 4 to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the library’s event page.

 

Saturday, May 12

Troy Hill’s “Find a Bee” Pollinator Event

Interested in learning more about our region’s natural pollinators? Interested in helping build community green spaces in your neighborhood? Then stop by Troy Hill from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help participate in Troy Hill Citizens’ Inc.’s “Find a Bee” Pollinator Planting Habitat event. Volunteers will help seed, tilt and water selected sites and will receive training and education on how to improve pollinator habitats. Selected sites are Lookout St. Community Garden on the corner of Lookout St. and Eggers St. and Troy Hill Citizens Park on Claim St. and Hatteras St. Volunteers are asked to meet at Troy Hill Citizens Office at 9:45 a.m. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Flower Planting at Legion Park

The Brighton Heights Citizens Federation is hosting a planting party from 9 to 11 a.m.  Volunteers will be able to plant at Legion Park or the 5 Corners, kids are welcome. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

An Afternoon with Caroll Spinney at Rangos Giant Cinema

Want to meet the voice behind Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch? Caroll Spinney, a Pittsburgh native who voiced two of “Sesame Street’s” most iconic characters will be at the Rangos Giant Cinema for a special Q&A session on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13. Spinney will be on site to talk with fans, answer questions and introduce a special screening of “Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird.” For more information, visit the Science Center’s event page.

Cool PGH Meet Up at Allegheny Inn

Cool Pittsburgh, a social group created by Northsider Willy James will be hosting a mixer at Allegheny Inn from 6 to 9 p.m. Cool PGH is a group of multimedia content creators who share and promote Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape. Nancy Hayes Kilgore at City Books

Author Nancy Hayes Kilgore will be at City Books from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for a reading from her latest novel, “Wild Mountain.” This is Kilgore’s second novel following her 2011 work “Sea Level.” For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Shelf Life String Band at Bier’s Pub

Local string band, Shelf Life String Band will be performing at Bier’s Pub in Allegheny West from 7 to 10 p.m. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

Mother’s Day Rosé Market at Threadbare

Threadbare Cider and Mead will be hosting a pre-Mother’s Day Rosé Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests will be able to enjoy the release of the new Bouquet de Rosé Cider. For more information, visit Threadbare’s event page.

Ancient History at Scratch F&B

In part of a summer concert series with Wild Kindness Records, Ancient History will be performing at Scratch Food & Beverage from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Saturday concert series runs through until August 28. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.

 

Sunday, May 13

Mother’s Day Tea Party

Manchester Historical Society is hosting a special Mother’s Day Tea Party from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two Victorian mansions will participate in the event: the Restored Richardsonian Romanesque home on West North Ave. and the Sheffield St. mansion. Guests will be able to enjoy a high tea experience with a complete tea menu, sandwiches and pastries. Two times are available: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the historical society’s event page.

Sahaja Meditation at Allegheny Library

The Allegheny Library will be hosting a Sahaja Meditation class from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit the library’s event page.
