Andy Warhol Bridge to re-open this weekend

Closed since August 2016, the Andy Warhol Bridge is scheduled to re-open Saturday, November 18 at 5 p.m.

According to an Allegheny County news release, the Seventh Street Bridge will officially be opened to traffic at 5 p.m. this Saturday.

The Andy Warhol Bridge, as it is more commonly known, has undergone $26 million worth of renovations since its closure last year. This includes improvements to the bridge’s concrete deck, super and substructures, lighting, drainage and the addition of a new coat of “Aztec Gold” paint.

The bridge, which connects the North Shore with downtown,  is scheduled to open the eastern (upstream) sidewalk to the public after this Friday’s Light Up Night festivities. The western (downstream) sidewalk will remain closed until March 2018. Motorists can expect to see three lanes of traffic with wider shoulders in comparison to the narrow four-lane, two-way traffic patterns that were previously in place on the bridge.

The rehabilitation project has been a joint-operation between Brayman Construction, PennDOT and the Federal Highway Association. The Rachel Carson (Ninth Street) Bridge will be the next “Sister Bridge” to undergo renovations. Construction on the bridge will begin in the summer of next year with an anticipated re-opening date for the winter of 2019. The Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge rehabilitation project is expected to run through the summer of 2020 thru the winter of 2021.
