Locations, dates of recycling bin distribution for Northside

The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) and Allegheny CleanWays are partnering with the Buhl Foundation for a second year to continue the “Northside Keeps It Clean” campaign designed to educate and encourage Northside residents to become more active recyclers.

All Northside residents interested in receiving a free 32-gallon recycling container should register in advance to attend one of these upcoming events:

  • Saturday, April 8, from 9 – 11 a.m. at The Pittsburgh Project in Perry Hilltop
  • Saturday, April 15, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Manchester Citizens Corporation
  • Saturday, April 22, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Brightwood Civic Group in Marshall-Shadeland
  • Saturday, April 29, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Waisenhaus Park in Spring Hill

To register and to learn more about this initiative, visit www.prc.org/one-clean-northside or call Mary Kate Ranii at 412-488-7490 ext. 105.

In addition to placing recycling bins in residences and public spaces, the “Northside Keeps It Clean” campaign – introduced in fall 2015 – features in-school education, illegal dumpsite cleanups and other projects.

The multi-tiered effort fights litter and illegal dumpsites while increasing recycling rates across Pittsburgh’s northern neighborhoods.  Last year in the Northside, PRC and Allegheny CleanWays took part in 13 community cleanups, removed approximately 150 tons of material from illegal dumpsites, educated hundreds of students and distributed more than 1,100 recycling bins to community members.

“By providing households with recycling containers we know that we increase the number of people recycling and decrease contamination in the recyclable materials,” said PRC Regional Director Justin Stockdale.  “These bins hold more recyclables, serve as a reminder every collection day and include clear guidelines explaining what is recyclable.”

According to Myrna Newman, Executive Director of Allegheny CleanWays, “Litter poses huge health threats to our environment, harming wildlife, clogging waterways, causing blight in neighborhoods and threatening public health.  Furthermore, PennDOT spends millions of taxpayer dollars every year to clean up litter along our roadways.  As part of our Northside Keeps it Clean programming to combat litter and increase recycling rates, we’re working with the Buhl Foundation and Northside community groups to distribute hundreds of recycling containers for residents.”
