Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Student Police Academy accepting applications grades 10-12

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is pleased to present an opportunity for local high school students (public or private schools) to learn about the roles and career opportunities within the Bureau. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Student Police Academy (SPA) will offer discussion, field trips and experience of what policing is all about! This course is free of charge.

Students will receive two and a half hours of training each Monday from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Kingsley Association Community Center in Larimer beginning Monday, February 27, 2017 for 10 weeks.

SPA participants will learn about training and the operations of the Police Bureau, along with the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics and many other subjects. They’ll also learn about processing crime scenes and the many functions of the specialty units, including K-9 and SWAT. Additionally, SPA participants will meet many of the officers who are out on the streets daily, as well as members of the command staff and training staff that serves them.

Instructors are law enforcement professionals who teach both veteran and recruit police officers. Students will leave the course with a greater understanding of an LEO’s job and how they serve the community, along with ideas on how they can help improve the communities in which they live. Most importantly, students will get to know the men and women behind the badge on a more personal level.

This program is not an accredited certification course to become a sworn police officer.

For more information on the City of Pittsburgh Student Police Academy, please contact Sergeant Eric Kroll at eric.kroll@pittsburghpa.gov or John Tokarski with the Public Safety Department at 412-255-2117 or john.tokarski@pittsburghpa.gov.
