MLK Day to be celebrated on Northside

Staff reports

Mattress Factory to celebrate MLK birthday

The Mattress Factory in Central Northside will be holding their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Bash on Jan. 18 from 12-4 p.m. Although typically closed on Mondays, the Mattress Factory will be open for this special occasion, opening their doors in order to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will feature a number of guests and activities, including an interactive embroidery project with artist William Chambers along with live music from DJ Pandemic Pete.

“Seeing our Pittsburgh neighbors and families interact with and connect to the museum during our community days is the best part of my job,” Director of Education, Shannon Berkheiser said in a statement. “The environment is truly unlike any other in the city.”

The Mattress Factory Education Department serves more than 17,000 annually through their outreach and education programs. The Mattress Factory hosts a number of galleries from various artists proudly displaying abstract, contemporary, and multi-sensory artwork. The museum’s galleries are located at 500 Sampsonia Way.

Admission for the Martin Luther King Birthday Bash is free, but visitors are encouraged to donate and “give what they can.”

Children’s Museum allows kids to be ‘King for a Day’

The Children’s Museum in Allegheny Center will have a day filled with King-inspired events, including ‘King for a Day’ hosted by the Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show, On Freedom Corner and Many Hands.

The events will start at 10 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. A live webcast ‘Streaming Justice’ will be broadcasted until 6 p.m.

‘In Studio’ programs will be available before and after Jan. 18. For more information and a list of events visit the official website.

Science Center to hold annual Conservation Day

Carnegie Science Center and Duquesne Light will host Conservation Day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18.

All visitors will enjoy free general admission, parking and an Omnimax film from 10 a.m-5 p.m. courtesy of Duquesne Light’s sponsorship.

“Martin Luther King Day is a great time to focus on community, and we’re excited to offer a day of fun and learning through our partnership with Duquesne Light,” Ann Metzger, co-director of the Science Center, said in a release.
Several live science demonstration shows will be available, including exploring the human body with Tasteful Tidbits and It’s Alimentary, Watson presented in the Body Stage, and The Energy Show and High Voltage presented in the Works Theater.

“We are proud to give back to the community by offering families the opportunity to visit Carnegie Science Center free of charge,” Lisa Minor, senior community relations specialist at Duquesne Light, said. “Through this partnership, we are pleased to share fun, creative ways for people to learn how they can help nurture and protect the world around them.”
