Dreams and Japanese cuisine to be featured at art events this weekend

By Justin Criado

Dreams on display at City of Asylum event

Central Northside’s City of Asylum will host the grand opening  of Denise Mahone’s “The Dreamplace Project” installation Nov. 15 from 10-11:30 a.m.

Coffee and light food will be served at 10 a.m. and Mahone, a Central Northside resident, will begin an artist talk at 10:30 a.m., followed by several of the project participants reading their dreams.

“The Dreamplace Project” is a public art project that has been commissioned by City of Asylum. The project acknowledges and encourages curiosity about the collective dream life of the Central Northside and surrounding neighborhoods by facilitating attention to dreams. Participating neighbors can anonymously contribute a narrative and word/phrase from their personal dreams. The public artwork, to be installed in the Alphabet Reading Garden in the Fall of 2015, will include an evolving psychic map of the place using neighbors’ dream words that tells an otherwise invisible story of the place.

Mahone moved to Central Northside in 2006 after completing an M.F.A. in sculpture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 2002. She also holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and has a special interest in the intersections between place and place-making, ecology, creative practice and healing.

The event, supported by the Office of Public Art, is free. To RSVP visit the official website.

Neu Kirche pairs art with wine for Open Kitchen event

Neu Kirche will host Open Kitchen Nov. 13 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

The art-inspired cooking event will feature New Zealanders Fuyuko Akiyoshi and Fiona Amundsen as they prepare a range of Japanese inspired hors d’oeuvres served with sake cocktails and a range of New Zealand wines. Amundsen’s film Machine Wind will be screening during the event as local live music will also fill NK’s East Deutschtown gallery.  Proceeds benefit NK’s New Zealand residency program.
