Veterans event to be held at Stage AE

By Justin Criado

The 8th Annual Stand Down Pittsburgh event will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at North Shore’s Stage AE from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.,  inviting the Pittsburgh community to come together with the goal to serve between 750-1,000 veterans at the day-long services fair.  More than 60 local community agencies and more than 200 volunteers are expected to be on hand to make sure veterans in need are receiving the help and resources they deserve, according to a Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania press release.

Homeless veterans and veterans at the risk of becoming homeless will receive a free breakfast and lunch, hot showers, haircuts, clothing, access to an on-site food pantry, and connections to health and service providers. This is the first year the event has been held in Northside, but the VLP has worked in the area recently through its Project Journey for Men, which provides home for struggling veterans with children. A property in Troy Hill is one such example.

Stand Down Pittsburgh is a community effort organized by Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Pittsburgh Mercy Operation Safety Net, Shepherd’s Heart Fellowship, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard. The event is sponsored by Peoples Natural Gas.
