Annual City of Asylum concert this weekend

By Erika Fleegle

In celebration of launching into its second decade, the annual City of Asylum Jazz Poetry concert Sept. 12 in West Allegheny Commons Park from 7:45-9:45 p.m. will once again give local audiences the quality, creative entertainment they’ve come to expect, but with a twist.

To keep with the organization’s tradition of breaking the mold with fresh and creative performances, this year’s featured performers depart a little from past years. For the first time since 2006, jazz great Oliver Lake will not be featured in the jazz ensemble. Instead, he will be collaborating wth Vijay Iyer as a duo with this year’s featured poets, Heather McHugh and Terrance Hayes.

The event will also feature several other artists and musicians. The event is free, but you can RSVP online. The concert will also be streamed live online. For more information about the event and artists visit the official website.
