For many, summer festivals mean gorging on all things battered and deep-fried. But on locals will have the chance to try a twist on festival culture during VegFest Aug. 22 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Taking place in East Park in Allegheny Commons, the event aims to introduce visitors to the idea of promoting an ethical, sustainable lifestyle.

The centerpiece of this festival is no doubt the food. Local vendors will be on hand all day offering standard vegan fare like smoothies, falafel and hummus, though, new twists on old favorites like vegan nachos and Twinkies will also be up for sampling. Restaurants featured on the day’s roster include area staples like Central Northside’s El Burro, Randita’s food truck, Double Wide Grill, Istanbul Grille, White Rabbit Café and Onion Maiden. Visitors will also get a sneak peek of what’s to come from Allegra Hearth Bakery’s new vegan spot, B-52 Café.

In addition to all the delicious food, VegFest also functions as an affair the whole family can enjoy. Live music, crafts, face-painting and other kid-friendly activities will take place throughout the day.

For those wanting to get in touch with their animal-loving side, local animal rights organizations will be present with information about adoption options, donating, and volunteering. Several rescued breeds will be on-site for educational workshops, and cats and dogs will be available for adoption.

The first hundred visitors to VegFest will be treated to a free goodie bag packed with healthy treats. Raffle tickets will also be sold for a chance to win one of a variety of gift baskets with all proceeds going toward animal rights groups.

Admission is free. For event updates and additional details, check out the Pittsburgh VegFest Facebook page.
