Chefs look to get creative in annual brunch challenge

By Sabrina Romano

Ten local chefs are bringing their talent to the New Hazlett Theater in Allegheny Center this Saturday, Jan. 31 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for Northside Common Ministries’ fourth annual Pantry Brunch Challenge.

The challenge for the chefs is that they can only prepare brunch food with ingredients stocked in a soup kitchen like canned vegetables, beans and boxed milk.

“This challenge forces you to think outside the box and come up with creative substitutions,” said Michael Shimek, a chef from Three Rivers casino. “It benefits a terrific cause and I am looking forward to preparing a winning dish.”

During the event, people will be able to enjoy brunch treats and music from a local bluegrass group called the Millbillys.

The event costs $25 and all of the proceeds will raise money for the Northside Community Food Pantry which provides food for roughly 1,000 individuals every month. Tickets can be purchased online at www.northsidefoodpantry.org.
