Northside Public Safety: August 2013 – Beat the heat

Though Pittsburgh saw some cool, clear and comfortable days at the end of July, The Northside Public Safety Council would like to remind residents that the summer isn’t over yet, and there may be more hot days ahead.

“Look after the folks around you,” said Northside Public Safety President David Stacy.

He encourages residents to make sure elderly neighbors are safe, pets are kept indoors and that everyone stay hydrated during heat waves.

The public safety council and the Zone 1 police will also participate in National Night Out on August 10. There will be street fairs and events throughout the Northside to help residents get to know their neighbors. (See the full story on page 20).

On Wednesday, August 7, the public safety council will also host the annual Zone 1 Appreciation Day to honor the Pittsburgh fire fighters, police officers, EMS and crossing guards.

Officers will be fed and prizes and gift certificates will be auctioned off.

To make a donation to defray the cost of food and prizes, call 412-321-0295.

In the first three weeks of June and the first two weeks in July, approximately 700 incidents were reported throughout the Northside, which led to approximately 262 arrests.

The Northside Public Safety Council is a nonprofit corporation composed of community leaders, businesses, government officials the Housing Authority, property owners and the Zone 1 Pittsburgh Police.

The Northside Public Safety Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. on the mezzanine level of The Northside Leadership Conference’s offices at 4 Allegheny  Center. All are welcome.

A useful resource for the community is the Zone 1 website at www.communitysafety.pittsburghpa.gov.
