Memorial Day on the Northside

We’re just a few hours away from the start of Memorial Day Weekend and by default a long awaited summer on the Northside. Here are a few Memorial Day festivities happening around the neighborhoods this weekend.

Brighton Heights Memorial Day Celebration
When: May 27
Where: Legion Park
Brighton Heights will host its annual ceremony that last about an hour with patriotic songs, the raising of the flag, taps and participation of the boy scouts and the Perry High School Jr. ROTC group.  The program is sponsored by Brighton Heights, Brightwood and the American Legion Post.  Emmanuel Christian Church on Davis Ave will have a free picnic after the ceremony.

USS Requin Memorial Day Ceremony

When: Sunday May 26, 2013
Where: Carnegie Science Center

Carnegie Science Center will honor veterans with a special memorial on Sunday, May 26. Led by veterans of USS VI Requin Base, the ceremony takes place from 10 – 11 a.m. on the USS Requin submarine, docked on the Ohio River.

The event is free to the general public, who are encouraged to watch from the Ohio River shore.

At 10 a.m., the Beaver County Stearman Association will perform a flyover with a vintage Stearman World War II-era biplane, weather permitting. Afterward, veterans of the Requin Base will toll the bell once for each submarine that is on “Eternal Patrol” and will cast flower petals on the water so that they may “travel down the rivers of this great nation and to the oceans” where fellow submarines have gone down. The Marine Color Guard is from the Three Rivers Leatherneck Detachment 310 and members of VFW Post 9199 are serving as Honor Guard with gun salute.

After the service, visitors are encouraged to tour Requin, explore life on a submarine, and discover challenges that the crew faced while on board. Admission to the submarine will be free all day.

Troy Hill Memorial Day Parade

When: Monday May 27, 2013
Where: Troy Hill

Come join Troy Hill and other Northside veterans as they celebrate Memorial Day and those who have lost their lives serving this country with a parade.
