Spring cleaning on the Northside

Spring is in the air, and Northsiders are already getting to work. Throughout the Northside, community organizations will be picking up litter and planting flowers in their neighborhoods, some in celebration of Earth Day and others to chase away winter’s unattractive effects.

Check out some clean-up efforts happening in different neighborhoods so you can grab a trash bag and lend a hand!


Allegheny City Central (Central Northside)
Date: Saturday April 20, 2013
Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Meeting place: Alpine Tot Lot

Allegheny City Central residents will participate in the City’s Redd Up Day on Saturday. Particpants will weed, pick up trash and do some light landscaping at the Alpine Tot Lot.  Work will begin at 10:00 AM and go till 12:00 PM.  MWSS Greenspace will provide all the tools and gloves to use and vouchers for drinks and snacks at the Buena Coffee Shop.


Brighton Heights
Date: Saturday April 20, 2013
Time: 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Meeting place: 3629 California Avenue

The Brighton Heights Citizens’ Federation will host a clean-up on Saturday to spruce up residential streets and business districts. The BHCF will provide gloves, vests and cleaning equipment. Participants will meet at the BHCF office where they will be split up into teams.

Brightwood
Date: Saturday April 20, 2013
Time: 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Meeting place: 3050 Shadeland Ave.

The Brightwood Civic Group will provide gloves, bags, vests and pizza to residents who come out on Saturday to help clean up the neighborhood. The BCG is also in need of some donated landscaping plants for the clean-up and several greening and landscaping projects coming up. Fineview
Date: Saturday April 20, 2013
Time: 10 a.m.
Meeting place: the overlook on Catoma Street.

Neighbors will meet at the Catoma Street overlook on Saturday morning to clean up Fineview. Gloves, bags, vests and refreshments will be provided. Saturday evening, neighbors will meet again at James Street Gastropub on Foreland Avenue for their Earth Day fundraiser. Proceeds will go towards a new shed for the Fineview community garden.

Historic Deutschtown
Date: Saturday April 20, 2013
Time: 10 a.m.
Meeting place: East Park at Cedar Ave. and East Ohio St.

The East Allegheny Community Council’s cleanup volunteers will meet in East Park at Cedar Avenue and East Ohio Street on Saturday at 10 a.m. Volunteers will pick up litter, pull weeds and pick up fallen branches in Allegheny Commons Park and on streets or alleys that need attention. The EACC will supply broom & dustpan or a pick-up sticks to those who need them, though participants are asked to bring their own bags and work gloves.

Observatory Hill
Date: Sunday April 21, 2013
Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Meeting place: Mt. Pleasant Road

Residents participating in Observatory Hill Inc.’s spring clean-up are encouraged to bring gloves, orange safety vests,  gas powered blowers, string trimmers, lawn mowers, weeders, bags and rakes. OHI encourages neighbors who can’t participate on Sunday to do what they can on their own to clean up areas around their homes.

Spring Hill

Though this weekend is the Spring Hill Civic League’s official spring redd-up, neighbors already have made efforts to pick up garbage along Itin Street and plan to continue the good work on Saturday.
