Love Your Block grants impact Spring Garden Avenue

Using a $1,000 Love Your Block grant, the Community Alliance of Spring Garden and East Deutschtown, leveraged over $5,000 in donated funds and supplies to drastically improve the aesthetics of Spring Garden Avenue.

The Community Alliance repaired and painted the side of Waltmire Pharmacy, painted two nearby buildings, cleared an overgrown hillside, planted wildflowers and built a 1,000 square foot raised planter bed.

In addition to the Waltmire building, the Family Dollar was also painted along with the Cross Trucking building, which are all located within two blocks of each other.

The project was completed at the end of September, but due to the amount of support the project gained, the mayor’s office offered the Community Alliance an extra $2,000 gift card to Home Depot for the doing the year’s best project and leveraging the most support with the initial grant.

CASGAD President Ruth Ann Dailey said Waltmire’s building was chosen because it was near the adjacent lot and in addition to being a busy store, it was a business that was a “great neighbor.”

In addition improving Spring Garden’s busiest street, Dailey explained that the project also helped establish new relationships between businesses and neighbors, who donated to the effort.

“Bringing all these people together in on ambitions and successful project was the real triumph,” said Dailey. “Now we have even more stakeholders committed to revitalizing our community.”

“I really appreciate all the work they did so much,” said Don Waltmire, owner of Waltmire Pharmacy. “It made that side of the building 100 percent better.”
