Greetings,

Thankfully, it has been a quick winter in the City of Pittsburgh, and the summer months are quickly approaching. Thanks to many, crime has been down in our community. However, I would like to take this time to recognize that crime often comes as the summer months heat up. As Councilman to District 6, I would like to encourage everyone to attend the monthly Northside safety meetings on every first Monday of the month from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, at Allegheny Center #4, Mezzanine Level, located at 4 Allegheny Center Mall.

The Northside Public Safety Council is the intermediary organization between Police Zone 1 and the residents of the Northside community. You should also feel free to contact my office at 412-255-2134 for an updated schedule of the various Northside neighborhood council meetings within District 6. It is my hope that with more community engagement towards public safety initiatives, there can be more proactive work towards deterring crime in our neighborhoods before the expected summer peak in criminal activity.

On another note, I am pleased to inform you that in conjunction with community groups and stakeholders, there will be a new, community-designed playground installed in Allegheny Commons Park on Tuesday, June 19, dubbed “Build Day”. This project is a collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the PA League of Cities and Municipalities (PLCM), Central Northside Neighborhood Council and the national nonprofit KaBOOM!.

“Build Day” is a community-wide celebration of play where 200+ volunteers will install a playground and complete other site improvement projects around the Park. There are many opportunities for community members to get involved. In addition to volunteering on Build Day, residents may join planning committees that are overseeing recruitment and registration, securing food for volunteers, coordinating service-learning projects for youth, ensuring safety and maintenance, and helping to make the project as environmentally friendly as possible.

This is the third straight year the Pennsylvania League of Cities & Municipalities will build a KaBOOM! Playground in conjunction with their annual conference, which will convene civic leaders and elected officials in Pittsburgh this June.  To sign up for a committee, register for Build Day, or receive more information on this exciting project, email [email protected] or call 412-255-2280.

Lastly, I am reminding all of you that our monthly District 6 mobile office visits from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm are at the Northside Branch of the Carnegie Library, located at 1230 Federal St., on the second  Monday of every month. Our District 6 office also visits the Manchester Citizens Corporation from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm, located at 1319 Allegheny Ave., on the second Thursday of every month.  These monthly open discussions are designed for all constituents, business owners and stakeholders of District 6 to have an open opportunity to speak to me directly about any issue, question or concern they may have. Since being elected, my office has taken a proactive approach to community engagement and constituent services. Please feel free to stop by and talk to me face to face anytime. I look forward to seeing you soon in District 6!

R. Daniel Lavelle
