The Prime Stage Theatre will begin its 15th season this November at the New Hazlett Theater with a performance of “The Scarlet Letter.”
acclaimed feminist writer Carol Gilligan and her son Jonathan. Gilligan was known famously for her work in gender studies culminating in the book, “In a Different Voice.”
Set in 17th century Boston, the tale of Hester Prynne unfolds as a case of adultery is punished to the most extreme lengths. Hester is forced to wear a mark forever setting her apart from the crowd.
Gilligan suggests that the play has more relevance to modern times that many may have thought while sitting in their high school English class.
“Hester Prynne was a heroine who could speak to modern audiences,” writes Gilligan.
This adaptation strays little from the classic Hawthorne tale, with only a small change made to the stage performance, the addition of Hester Prynne’s daughter as an adult. She gives her own insight regarding the choices that her mother made.
The play is directed by Katie Mueller and premiers November 4 at the New Hazlett Theater. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for Seniors, and $10 for students, and can be purchased online or by phone.
