Event to showcase restored Tiffany windows

From Calvary United Methodist Church:

The magnificently restored Louis Comfort Tiffany windows of the sanctuary of Calvary United Methodist Church will be spectacularly showcased on the first day of summer, Tuesday, June 21, 4-7 pm, during WINDOWS ON THE WORD, a community open house. The unique light of the longest day of the year will provided lighting effects as the windows shimmer and glisten in surprising ways intended by the designers of the Tiffany Studios who were commissioned to create the windows in the late 19th century. The result is rippling water, sparkling metallic and other three-dimensional features within the designs of the window, two of which are 30 feet high and the other the most expensive Tiffany commission of its time.

On the half hour, short presentations on the windows and the featured King James Bible scriptures will be given, in addition to musical selections and background on the church. Docents and guides will provide information on the window and church history during mini-tours throughout the event. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. Visitors may arrive at any time to enjoy any part of or all of the event. Groups are welcome.

WINDOWS ON THE WORD is part of Calvary’s ongoing celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible’s publication and is presented in conjunction with Poets Corner, its residence arts series. The next event in the 2011 series will be Poetry of Peace, a free concert of reading and music for the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on Sunday, September 11 at 4 pm.

Calvary United Methodist Church is located at 971 Beech St. at Allegheny Ave., in the Allegheny West neighborhood of the Northside, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.
