Hello everyone, As Council begins its focus on negotiating and passing a balanced budget for 2026, I wanted to share with you some small but equally important projects that have been going on throughout the Northside.

After allocating $60,000 in the 2025 Capital Budget for a traffic study at the intersection of Brighton Heights Boulevard, California Avenue, and Termon Avenue, I’m happy to announce that the Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) has begun the study and will evaluate the intersection over the next six months. This intersection currently presents several safety challenges. Between 2020 and 2024, nine crashes were reported, including four that resulted in serious injuries and one involving a pedestrian. The city has identified multiple operational issues and is now working to develop a safe, accessible, and implementable design for future improvements. In the 2024 Capital Budget, I allocated $420,000 for a traffic signal upgrade at the intersection of Allegheny Avenue and Western Avenue. I’m pleased to share that DOMI began this project back in July with pavement marking changes and will continue with the installation of new strain poles, pedestrian countdown signals, leading and accessible pedestrian signals, and 12-inch LED vehicular signal heads with backplates. Installation is planned for early November. More details on this project can be found at engage.pittsburghpa.gov/traffic-signal-projects/allegheny-western-traffic-signal-replacement

As part of the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce landfill waste and promote sustainable practices, the Department of Environmental Services will hold its biannual Yard Debris Collection event on Nov. 8. Residents are encouraged to place yard debris such as leaves, branches, brush, grass, and pumpkins at the curb before 6 a.m. for pickup. All materials must be in brown paper bags weighing less than 35 pounds, and branches should be under 5 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Items that do not follow these guidelines will not be collected. Yard debris collected during this event will be composted and used to enrich landscapes across the city.

This past June, the city launched the OneStopPGH Insights Tool, a public-facing map platform designed to increase transparency and give residents easier access to important information about their neighborhoods. The tool features interactive mapping and real- time updates on PLI permits, zoning applications, code enforcement cases, and more. Following the success of the initial launch, the city is now introducing Phase 2 of the Insights Tool, which expands its functionality to include interactive mapping of all DOMI permits, along with several new features to improve usability. Finally, the city’s 23rd Annual Gingerbread House competition returns to the lobby of the City-County Building, where the people of Pittsburgh, the surrounding Allegheny County communities, and beyond are invited to build their own edible houses as the competition display returns this holiday season! All eligible houses will be displayed from Light Up Night, Nov. 22, through Jan. 3, 2026. Registration to enter closes at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 9. To enter, go to getinvolved.pittsburghpa.gov/gingerbread-house-competition
