In a recent report, the Center for Disease Control stated that “black women [are] 3.3 times more likely than white women to suffer a pregnancy-related death,” according to The New York Times article on May 7.

This is just one of the reasons, but a big reason, for why Syreeta Gordon became a doula.

“A lot of black babies and women are dying in childbirth and once we have more women of color becoming doulas and helping other women of color, it will help offset the deaths,” Gordon said.

Founder of Kangaroo Birthing & Maternity Concierge, Gordon will be hosting the First Annual “Unshakeable Motherhood” One Night Retreat from 5-8 p.m. on May 28 at CoLab 18 inside Nova Place, 100 S. Commons.

Syreeta Gordon, second from right, will host a resource fair for new mothers at CoLab18 on May 28 called the “Unshakeable Motherhood” One Night Retreat. Find out more here.

The event is geared towards encouraging and educating new and expecting mothers and will be set up like a resource fair for attendees to walk around and ask questions to vendors.

This year the event will have on hand: doulas, midwives, obstetricians, lactation consultants, prenatal fitness experts, chiropractors, pregnancy photographers, and information on childcare facilities.

“You will come away with practical mommy tips that you can implement, community resources, and a strong health team,” Gordon said. “I think it is essential for the millennial mother to be informed, resourceful and prepared.”

There will also be speakers at the event including Muffy Mendoza, Creator and Blogger of Pittsburgh Brown Mamas and author of “The Brown Mama Mindset.”

Other speakers include Jatolloa Davis, a certified nurse midwife at The Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health, and Lannea Adamson: Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Licensed Social Worker, and owner of “Lannea Speaks.”

The event is free, but attendees must register and can do so by clicking here.
