“Motivated,” “hardworking,” and “thoughtful” were a few of the positive adjectives that the staff at Perry High used to describe the upwards of 150 Honor Roll students during the Parent School Community Council Honors Breakfast Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Observatory Hill high school.

Stephanie Turnbull, the assistant principal, said holding a celebratory breakfast is important for the students.

“We really want to acknowledge these hardworking kids. (The event) shows true commitment to their education,” Turnbull said. “It’s truly a big deal.”

Kiley Krizan, a learning environment specialist, co-organized the event.

Krizan said the staff encourages the students to strive for Honor Roll by reminding them about the Pittsburgh Promise, which offers college scholarship opportunities. Gene Walker, a Pittsburgh Promise program manager, was there to speak to the students about the scholarship.

This celebratory breakfast is a way “to include the parents in the learning process,” Krizan said.

Ronnie Miller attended the breakfast to support his son Andre, a junior.

“I am very proud that he is keeping on the right path,” Ronnie said. “He has done this year after year and I am here to support him.”

Like Ronnie, Vivian Wilson was there for her daughter, senior Keana Player.

“This event will encourage her to get (Honor Roll) again next report,” Wilson said.

Player said paying more attention in class and doing all of her schoolwork is what helped her most in achieving Honor Roll honors.

Shelby Zastawa, a 12th grader who will be attending University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown to study engineering, said striving and achieving Honor Roll has taught her a positive work ethic.

“If you do your work, good things will happen,” Zastawa said. “I think it is nice that they are rewarding the kids who do what they are supposed to for once instead of focusing on the bad.”

Turnbull refers to the students on the Honor Roll as exceptional Perry students, which she says is “somebody (who) comes to school every day with a willingness to learn and a positive attitude.”
