The Northside | North Shore Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to welcome Robert Bertha as our new Communications and Programs Coordinator.
Robert is a skilled communicator with a strong background in public affairs, digital strategy, and media relations, having worked across both government and private sectors. Before joining the Chamber, he served as a Strategic Communications Specialist at the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) — a U.S. foreign aid agency — where he led global communication efforts focused on protecting the agency’s reputation, countering misinformation, and strengthening international partnerships.
With a reputation for delivering clear, effective messaging in high-pressure situations, Robert has advised leadership at federal agencies and international organizations, led rapid-response communications, and built relationships with global media and fact-checking partners. He earned his Master’s in Political Management from The George Washington University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Production and Media Management from Point Park University.
Robert brings a wealth of experience in communications, government service, workforce development, and community engagement. He has a passion for storytelling that aligns perfectly with the Chamber’s mission to Promote, Connect, and Support the Northside business community.
To help our members get to know him better, we sat down with Robert for a short Q&A about his background, what drew him to this role, and what he is most looking forward to accomplishing at the Chamber.
Q&A with Robert Bertha
1. Can you tell us a bit about your career path and how your experiences in communications, government, and workforce development have shaped your professional journey?
I’ve spent the past few years working in government service at the federal level, advising on communications for an international development agency. During my time there, I’ve witnessed the profound impact that local businesses can have on communities. I’m thrilled to leverage my experience in communication at the Chamber and share the inspiring stories of businesses that contribute to our community’s growth and prosperity.
2. What drew you to the Northside North Shore Chamber of Commerce and to this specific role as Communications & Programs Coordinator?
I’ve always enjoyed communicating and helping my local community. This role allows me to bring both passions together.
3. With your background in digital marketing and community engagement, what aspects of this position felt like the right next step for you?
This role felt like a natural progression. Over the past few years, I’ve dedicated myself to empowering communities, and it feels right to bring those skills back to my hometown.
4. The Chamber’s mission is to Promote, Connect, and Support our business community. Which of those pillars resonates most with you, and how do you hope to advance it in your role?
I find the “Promote and Connect” pillars most appealing. As I’ve mentioned earlier, I relish communicating and storytelling. I hope to leverage my skills in both areas to promote local businesses and foster connections between them and the community.
5. How do you see your background in political management and government informing your approach to community and business engagement here on the Northside?
My experiences have shown me that stakeholder and community support are crucial for the success of any programs or communication campaigns.
6. What are you most looking forward to accomplishing in your first few months with the Chamber?
I intend to concentrate on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the Chamber’s activities. The first few months will be dedicated to learning and establishing connections with our members.
7. Are there particular initiatives—like NorthSide-Works! or the Northside Cultural Collaborative — that you’re especially excited to work on?
I’m thrilled to join NorthSideWorks! This program is an incredible opportunity for both local businesses and the Northside community.
8. What role do you see communications and storytelling playing in promoting the Northside as a great place to live, work, and visit?
I believe sharing the stories of local residents and businesses is the most effective way to promote the Northside. When people can see themselves reflected in the community members, it fosters a more welcoming atmosphere. This contributes to the growth of an already remarkable community.
9. What are you hoping to learn or grow into professionally through this new opportunity?
There are numerous avenues for growth in this role. I believe it will take some time to fully comprehend all the goals I want to achieve with the Chamber.
10. Finally, what’s one fun fact or personal tidbit you’d like our members to know about you as you get started?
I’m a saltwater aquarium hobbyist. My wife and I are working to create additional aqua-cultured corals.
