West Ohio Street unofficially renamed Gus & Yiayia Way
The memory of one of the Northside’s most prominent citizens was honored by the City of Pittsburgh with the unofficial renaming of West Ohio Street.
In a ceremony on July 23, West Ohio Street was renamed Gus & Yiayia Way in commemoration of Gus Kalaris, well known on the Northside for the shaved ice stand he ran since 1951 until his death last year. The ceremony took place at the corner of West Ohio Street and Brighton Road, near where Gus & YiaYia’s is located.
Gus & YiaYia’s was first opened in 1934 by Gus’ father. Yiayia is a Greek term for grandmother and originally referred to Gus’ mother, though later became associated with his wife, Stella Kalaris.
Gus died on June 28, 2024 at the age of 92, shortly after the cart’s 90th anniversary. However, the stand has continued operating. While most well known for its ice balls, the stand also sells peanuts and popcorn, and traditionally operates during the spring and summer each year.
