Organizations and small businesses in Pittsburgh’s Northside are adapting their business models due to coronavirus concerns. The Northside Chronicle is piecing together a list of the efforts they are taking to reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19. The below list’s updates have been moved to our Updated Guide, here.

Northside Common Ministries Food Pantry

Now offering curbside service to established pantry clients via a new Facebook page. Use Facebook messenger on the page to place your order and set up a pickup time.

Tom Friday’s Market

Daily home delivery available; $2.50 for $25 minimum purchase. All delivery orders must be placed two days in advance. Call 412-766-4500 to check if delivery is available to your neighborhood.

Operating hours temporarily altered across all Giant Eagle supermarkets effective Sunday, March 15. Standalone GetGo sites will continue operating under regular business hours. Operating hours for Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Adjacent GetGo locations will reflect supermarket hours. Hospitals and Healthcare Centers:

Allegheny General Hospital

All Allegheny Health Network (AHN) facilities, including Allegheny General Hospital, have made changes to their visitation policy, which include “limiting patients to one visitor at a time in our hospitals.” Two visitors at at time are allowed in Labor and Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs).

Waltmire Pharmacy

Encouraging those with flu-like symptoms not to enter the pharmacy. Instead, have a family member or friend who is healthy pick up your prescription. Delivery and “no contact” delivery (prescription delivered to a safe place such as a mailbox) is available. Click here for more details.

North Side Christian Health Center

Available for urgent medical concerns, including sick visits for both new and established patients. Telephone consultations with providers are available and there’s a coronavirus response line for patients to speak to a provider directly about any concerns and symptoms. Patients are accepted regardless of their ability to pay and for all health insurance types. Covid-19 testing not yet started. Located at 816 Middle St., Phone: 412-321-4001, Hours: Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.


Schools & Educational Institutions:

Pittsburgh Public Schools

All schools closed starting Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 with possible extension. All athletics and events, as well as all Early Head Start, PreK, and Center programs also closed during this time. Via Twitter: “For students that depend on our school breakfast and lunch program, Grab and Go meals will be available at all 54 school locations from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Monday through Friday. Students are instructed to go to the school location closest to their home.” All building permits canceled, effective Monday, March 16, 2020. Sarah Heinz House

Closed for regular programming starting Friday, March 13, 2020 at 9 p.m. through Sunday, March 29. “Because we are committed to the most vulnerable population that we serve, we will continue to offer our daily food service to youth and teen members of SarahHeinz House who need to receive this service,” via email. Building will remain closed, but from Monday through Friday between 4:30 and 6 p.m., Boxed Dinners will be available for pick-up only at the turnaround circle near the building’s front entrance.

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and MuseumLab

Temporarily closed starting end of business day on Friday, March 13, via a press release. All areas of the museum will be deep cleaned at this time and the majority of the staff will begin working remotely. Field trips, events, and weddings will either be rescheduled or refunded. “Stay tuned for educational resources for children and families that can be done online or at home to help them learn and be creative during this time.”

Mattress Factory Museum

Closed for two-week initial period, starting Saturday, March 14, via an email. All public programs during this time are canceled.

Carnegie Science Center

This and all Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh closed through Friday, March 27. All museum activities also canceled.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

All locations, including Allegheny and Woods Run, will be closed to the public, effective on Sunday, March 15. Closures will remain in place through March 31. All fines for checked out items will be waived during this time. Also, via Twitter: “Programs, events and meeting room bookings will be canceled through April 16.” Follow updates online here.

Community Organizations:

Propel Northside Community Wellness Center

Free store is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on select Saturdays. “We have an abundance of personal care items and fresh produce available to give away,” according to an email from Carrie Barmen, Site Coordinator.

Manchester Citizens Corporation

Providence Connections

Closed for a minimum of 14 days as of Sunday, March 15. No child care or youth programs offered at this time.

Closed March 16-29. All reservations for studios and camera are canceled. Continue to submit your programming via file download, but submissions via DVD are not accepted during this time. “Depending on health advisories, we will reopen on Monday, March 30,” according to an email.

Cityview Church

Sunday gathering suspended for two weeks, starting Sunday, March 15. Thursday dinners will be served to-go.

Riverview Presbyterian Church

Both the fish fry and food bank will be takeout only the weekend of 3/13/2020. “Healing from Religious Hurt” at the Community House Presbyterian Church is canceled. Sunday services are on as scheduled, but will not include the “passing of the peace.”

City Books

Outlined an evolving plan in four stages in an email newsletter. Stage one includes “in-store preventative measures” such as frequent cleaning and a campaign to increase social media subscribers, stage two includes by-request book concierge services with online invoicing and delivery options, stage three includes “active and aggressive” online sales, video updates, and the possibility of live-streamed readings, and stage four is no business activity. Stage two strategies, according to the e-newsletter on 3/13/2020, are currently in effect. “These stages probably aren’t linear and we may shift back and forth depending on the contagion curve and our own health.” March events canceled “in hopes of flattening the contagion curve.” Book orders available.
