New Three Rivers Stadium markers erected
Three Rivers Stadium, the arena which hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers from 1970 to 2000, has three new markers erected commemorating baseball history made there.
The markers were unveiled at a dedication ceremony on April 27 attended by many Pittsburgh and Pennsylvanian icons and officials, including Roberto Clemente Jr., the son of the legendary Pittsburgh Pirate Roberto Clemente.
The first of the markers is located where second base was located at Three Rivers and memorializes the spot where Clemente doffed his hat to the fans after his 3,000th hit. The second is located where the field’s pitcher’s plate was located and commemorates the three “no-hitters” thrown at the stadium. The first of these was performed in 1971 by Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals, while the latter two were thrown by Pittsburgh Pirates John Candelaria and Francisco Cordova in 1976 and 1997, respectively.
The final marker is an informational panel detailing the above events and more which took place at the field.
The markers are located on the sidewalks of West General Robinson Street near the North Side Gold Lot 1A parking lot, between Acrisure Stadium and PNC Park.
Three Rivers Stadium was demolished in 2001 and was replaced by PNC Park for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Heinz Field (now Acrisure Stadium) for the Steelers.
