January poll results reported

By Sean P. Ray | Managing Editor

*Editor’s note: This story is edited from its print version to correct the headline.

It may be a new year, but we still have time for old traditions. So let’s once again take a look at the results of The Chronicle’s monthly polls during January and see how our readers responded.

Our first poll came in the wake of 2024 becoming 2025, so we asked if our readers had made any New Year’s resolutions. Well, we only got one response, and it was for “I never keep them.” I suppose you can’t fail a resolution if you never make one, though personally I’m aiming to exercise more and do more writing in my private time.

Following a similar theme, our next question asked if our readers stayed up to ring in the New Year. And 100% of respondents said that they had! I can remember when the prospect of staying up past midnight for New Years was exciting. Now, that’s usually when I get to bed on an average night!

Next up, we went with a theoretical. You can keep one Pittsburgh sports team, but all the others go away. Which one do you keep?

In what is probably not a big surprise, the Pittsburgh Steelers overwhelmingly won, with 66% of the vote. The remaining 33% was shared evenly between the Penguins, the Pirates and the Riverhounds.

While I somewhat expected the Steelers to come out on top, I thought the Penguins would have garnered more of the vote. I’m actually a baseball fan, so I would have sided with the Pirates on this one, though I’m debating giving the Riverhounds a chance this season.

Finally, with Pittsburgh getting hit by some major snowfall, we asked how many of our readers had ever gotten into a car accident due to snow and ice. This ended up being a 50-50 split, with half the vote going to “Yes, but it was only minor” and “No, but had some near-misses.” I’ve managed to avoid any bumps due to sliding on ice, though my baking up skills (or lack thereof) have earned me a few fender benders.

And that’s our recap of the poll results. We’ll be back next month with February’s results.

Our polls are posted every Sunday to thenorthsidechronicle.com. The polls are located on the right sidebar of every page on the website, so make sure to cast your votes and make your voice heard.
