Northside Happenings January 9 to 12, 2020

This weekend, take an evening run with the Steel City Road Runners, then treat yourself to some live music: options include psychedelic rock at Max’s Allegheny Tavern’s Rathskeller, rhythm and jazz at Bier’s Pub, indie pop at The Government Center, trip-hop at The Park House, and jazz at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Thursday, Jan. 9

Visual S.M.A.R.T. Goal Party at Nova Place

Steel City Road Runners Thursday Night Group Run

“Join Steel City Road Runners for a Thursday night group run.” Meet at the SCRR Garage, 810 River Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Three and five-mile options. Check-in is at 6:15 p.m.; run starts at 6:30 p.m. Register for free by clicking here.

Industry Night at Mike’s Beer Bar

“Every Thursday evening after work, get an early start on the weekend with half-off a number of draft beers and the same for any appetizers. It’s open to all, so bring along your friends!” 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. More information is available here.

Friday, Jan. 10

Live Music: Psych Night at The Rathskeller

“If you are into psychedelic rock and would like to check out some local talent, be sure to come to Max’s Allegheny Tavern’s Rathskeller for a night of fun! The lineup for the evening will be: JAKEtheHAWK (Heavy Psych), Different Places in Space (Neo-Psychedelia/Indie-Funk), and Dearmad (formerly known as QUIET – Industrial Blues Psych). There will be an open jam session after the last band plays. And if the music keeps going, so will the bar!” Note: If you haven’t been to Max’s before, the Rathskeller is in the basement of the restaurant. The Red Beans & Rice Combo at Bier’s Pub

The band’s first gig of 2020 at one of their favorite venues. Join them at Bier’s for “gourmet pub food, a full bar (including beers from War Streets Brewery), and of course, plenty of rockin’ rhythm & jazz. Admission is free (but gratuities are welcomed).” Click here for more information.

The Red Door Thrift Shop at Grace Lutheran Church

Red Door Thrift Shop in Troy Hill is open for the new year. They are open every first through fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Come and see the new selections that were donated over Christmas break! Women, men, children, juniors and plus size clothing is available. Clothing is 50 cents. Coats range from $2 to $5. Hats, scarves and gloves for the upcoming winter weather are also available. Find great buys on shoes, purses, jewelry, and unique household items. Jazz at Emmanuel Episcopal Church

“This is where the spirited and the spiritual join together in a new kind of celebration!� Jazz Vespers incorporates a series of finger-snapping jazz meditations and stirring poetic or interpretive readings that celebrate everyone as beloved human beings before a benevolent and wondrous creator. A scriptural message and passing of the peace round out the celebration of the theme of the day. This not-to-be-missed, unique worship experience is one everyone will want to see and hear for themselves. Directed by Dr. James Johnson Jr. of the Afro-American Music Institute on piano, the Jazz ensemble includes guest bassists, Lou Schreiber on reeds, James Johnson III on drums, and Pamela Johnson on vocals, as well as occasional guest musicians.
