Pittsburgh is a city of different neighborhoods, but it is not always clear where one ends and another begins. Three neighborhoods in the Northside, however, have come up with their own solution.

Three new neighborhood signs were erected last month for the Brighton Heights, Charles Street and Marshall-Shadeland neighborhoods. Each sign welcomes the reader to the neighborhood and features an image representing the area’s geography and culture.

“For example, the sign for Marshall-Shadeland shows a street called Schimmer Street, which is really steep and has city steps alongside of it,” said Ed Brandt, a volunteer with the Brightwood Civic Group.

According to Brandt, funding for the project came from the Northside Leadership Conference. The signs were a true community effort and the contents of each image was determined by members of each neighborhood.
