The newly opened Rangos Giant Cinema at the Carnegie Science Center is the only “giant screen” in the city

The Carnegie Science Center officially has the largest cinema screen in the city.

The Rangos Giant Cinema is boasting itself as the most advanced theater in Pittsburgh, featuring a massive 70-by-38-foot screen powered by two Christie laser-illuminated 4K laser digital projectors digital projections and a 45-speaker surround sound system courtesy of Dolby Atmos technology.

“From Hollywood feature films and 3D educational movies to live cultural events and multimedia lectures, we now can deliver a broad range of dynamic content in the theater,” Carnegie Science Center co-director, Ron Baillie said in a press release.

The theater had been closed since July and cost $3.7 million to complete. The cinema is part of a larger $45.9 million renovation project that includes the outdoor PPG Science Pavilion.

The theater, which is now open to the public, will feature both 2D and 3D shows with future plans of airing live satellite presentations, concerts, sporting and even video game events.

“The new technology allows the possibility of connecting our audience in real time with astronauts on the International Space Station or with scientists working in the field,” said Ballie.

Currently, visitors can enjoy four nature-oriented films including “Amazon Adventure,” “Tiny Giants,” “Animalopolis” and “Dream Big.”

Next month the theater will feature a special screening of “The Polar Express” starting December 1 and sci-fi fans can purchase early ticket sales for upcoming blockbuster “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
