Doors Open Pittsburgh to showcase 23 Northside buildings

The second annual Open Doors Pittsburgh to highlight 69 buildings throughout Downtown, Northside and the Strip District.

Open Doors is hitting the Northside for first time this weekend. The annual event offers residents and visitors alike a chance to explore multiple historic and modern buildings within various neighborhoods across the city.

“The event has something for everyone,” said Open Doors Pittsburgh creator, Bonnie Baxter. “You don’t have to be a historian or professional architect to enjoy it.”

Baxter first learned about the concept during a visit to Chicago where participants were offered a chance to explore their city in a casual, walkable environment, seeing buildings and portions of their neighborhoods in a whole new light. Baxter immediately fell in love with the idea and “wanted to bring it back home.”

Last year she organized the first annual Doors Open Pittsburgh showcasing 39 buildings in Downtown Pittsburgh. This year the event will be expanding to include Downtown Pittsburgh, the Strip District and the Northside with 69 buildings in total.

When asked about the inclusion of the Northside locations Baxter explained that after reviewing 600 responses from a volunteer survey from last year’s event, an overwhelming demand to see locations in both Northside and Strip District, was made clear.

This year 23 Northside buildings throughout the Allegheny West, Allegheny City Central, Allegheny Central,  Historic and East Deutschtown, North Shore, Sprig Garden and Troy Hill neighborhoods will be featured.

Doors Open Pittsburgh begins on Saturday, October 7 and runs through Sunday, October 8. Tickets can only be purchased online and are required for entry to all buildings.
