Better Choices, Better Health®
Living a healthy Life with a chronic condition
A Workshop on Six Consecutive Thursday Afternoons
Free for Seniors 60 and older

Bellevue, PA – Six consecutive Thursdays, starting February 16 – March 23, 2017 from 12:00 – 2:30 pm  – Live Joyously with a Free Workshop for Seniors 60 and older titled “Better Choices, Better Health” the “Chronic Disease Self-Management Program” to be held at the Prime Time Senior Center, 440 Lincoln Avenue, Bellevue, PA 15202.  Free refreshments and snacks.

Better Choices, Better Health® is another name for the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program that was developed at Stanford University in 1996 and has been implemented across the country and the world. The chronic conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease, stroke, COPD, and others. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are non-health professionals with a chronic disease themselves. One attendee reported, “I learned more from Better Choices, Better Health in six weeks than I have in 23 years of going to different doctors. And to think it was free!”

In the Stanford study, people who participated in the program demonstrated significant improvements in exercise, cognitive symptom management, communication with physicians, self-reported general health, health distress, fatigue, disability, and social/role activities limitations. They also spent fewer days in the hospital, and there was also a trend toward fewer outpatient visits and hospitalizations. Each participant receives a free copy of the book “Living a Healthy Life with a Chronic Condition”.   Through interactive participation and group feedback people become more confident and are able to combine more active lives with self-management of their chronic health condition.
