Weekly workshops for teens at CLP Allegheny

From 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Allegheny, 1230 Federal St., hosts The Labs Weekly Workshop.

The Labs are mentor-led workshops that focus on engaging teenage interests “and provide the necessary training to create something new,” according to Remake Learning Days.

“Open Lab is an opportunity to access the equipment and software with help from a mentor if you need it. Open Lab turns the library into a creative studio for youth.”

Admission is free and open to the public.

David Yake, the teen librarian at CLP Allegheny, said on Tuesday’s there is a guided activity hosted by a mentor who is a specialist in the topic for that weeks activity. The activities can range from “sewing, photography, video game making, and musical composition,” Yake said.

On Wednesday’s, the teens have free range to continue working on the project he or she started on Tuesday, or are able to work on another project. The teens have access to all of the equipment in the library, including software editing programs like Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, and GarageBand. There are also a plethora of musical instruments for the teens to use, such as electric guitars, turn tables and a keyboard.

Yake said the library is in the process of building a recording booth that the teens will be able to use to record music. All of the equipment is available for the teens to use at any time, but the mentor is only on hand during The Labs workshops.
