Two walks set for Northside this weekend

By Justin Criado

In an effort to raise awareness of the need for change, The Northside Coalition for Fair Housing and individuals from various communities will gather for the 8th Annual Women’s Walk for Peace and Peace Festival Saturday, Sept 26. The walk will begin at The Pittsburgh Project at 2801 N. Charles Street in Perry Hilltop  at 10 a.m., followed by the Peace Festival in Allegheny Commons’ West Park.

The Women’s Walk For Peace and Peace Festival provide an opportunity for community dialogue around the issues that plague women and their families resulting from gang violence, domestic violence, police brutality and other challenges, according to a press release. The day’s activities will include information booths; concert by local talent, including Jasiri X, Dewayne Dolphin, Flo Wilson, The House of Soul Band and others; a variety of vendors; and fun activities for kids.

To register, call 412-321-5527 or visit the official website.

Shuttle service will be available. Park your car in West Park and ride the shuttle to the Women’s Walk starting site.

Pittsburgh Allegheny’s Walk for the Promise

By Merecedes J. Howze

The Pittsburgh Promise is hosting its annual Walk for One Promise on Saturday, Sept. 26. The half-marathon is designed to raise money and awareness about the unique scholarship. One of the stops is Pittsburgh Allegheny.

“The Pittsburgh Promise, like many other local initiatives, is a support for our families. And we want to support the Promise in any way we can with this walk,” said Molly O’Malley-Argueta, Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5 principal, said.

At Pittsburgh Allegheny, supporters will pass out water and serve as a resting stop for participants. The walk, which begins and ends at Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary in South Side, will provide snacks, drinks, bathroom breaks and shuttles for walkers. For more information about how to get involved, please feel free to visit the official website.
