Pittsburgh Public Schools caught some national attention this week when U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan visited King PreK-8 in The Northside on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh was Duncan’s first stop on his annual “Education and the Economy Back-to-School Bus Tour” and his first visit to the city. 

While at King, Duncan praised Pittsburgh Public Schools for their teacher evaluation program, union flexibility and Pittsburgh Promise Program, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“There has been tremendous progress made in Pittsburgh,” said Duncan. 

In addition to praising Pittsburgh Public Schools, Duncan also addressed this year’s state budget cuts that withdrew $1 billion from public schools across the state.

“Budgets reflect our values. Anytime we chose not to invest in education we are in challenging times,” said Duncan
