25th Anniversary: The Northside 1985 – 2010

1985

  • February: First issue of the Northside Chronicle printed.
  • November: Latimer School in Deutschtown reopens as The School House Apartments.

1986

  • April: Sherif Abdelhak is appointed CEO of Allegheny Health Services, Allegheny General Hospital operator.
  • November: St. Mary’s Church in Deutschtown reopens as The Priory, A City Inn.

1988

  • May: Mayor Richard Caliguiri dies.
  • October: Northside Civic Development Council unveils renovated Eberhart & Ober Brewery building, with office space and room for the Penn Brewery.

1989

  • November: Ground broken for the Carnegie Science Center.

1990

  • April: The Northside celebrates its 150th anniversary, counting from Allegheny City’s founding in 1840.

1991

  • May: Dan Onorato elected to city council
  • September: The Buhl Science Center closes to the public.
  • October: Carnegie Science Center Opens.

1992

  • July: Nonprofit Save the Aviary, Inc. takes over operations at the Pittsburgh Aviary.

1993

  • November: Tom Murphy elected Pittsburgh’s first Northside mayor.

1994

  • May: The Andy Warhol Museum opens.
  • September: Riverview Park celebrates its centennial anniversary.
  • October: Friends of the Riverfront unveils first section of Three Rivers Heritage Trail.

1996

  • July: Ground broken on $22 million Lincoln at North Shore apartments and $1 million Alpine Street project in the Central Northside.

1998

  • June: Brighton Heights celebrates opening of Spring Hill Savings Bank.
  • December: Development begins on Troy Hill’s Wicklines Lane.

2000

  • September: Barbara Burns opens Sweet Time Cafe and post office on East Ohio Street.

2001

  • March: URA approves financing to Allegheny West for rehabilitation of 10 houses on Allegheny Avenue.
  • July: St. Nicholas Church receives historic designation.

2004

  • February: Calvary United Church of Christ undergoes extensive renovations.

2005

  • March: The Federal Hill project receives $1.8 million from Pennsylvania’s Housing Finance Agency.

2006

  • April: The Allegheny branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh closes after a lightning strike.
  • September: Renovated Woods Run branch of CLP opens.

2007

  • March: New Garden Realty Corp. sells the Garden Theater to the URA.
  • December: 100th anniversary of Allegheny City’s annexation commemorated

2008

  • January: Tunnel mining of Allegheny River begins for the North Shore Connector project.

2009

  • January: The Northside Chronicle launces website.
  • September: New Allegheny branch of CLP opens on Federal Street.

2010

  • January: District 1 Councilwoman Darlene Harris is elected Council President.
