Northside Community Food Pantry in desperate need of holiday donations
Thanksgiving is less than a month away and hundreds of local families will be wondering where the turkey, stuffing and fixings will come from.
The Northside Community Food Pantry provides a week’s worth of food for over 950 food insecure families each month, and is the largest single client of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Founded in 1982 over a Thanksgiving meal to unite the efforts of more than 30 local churches and dozens of community volunteers, the food pantry is run by Northside Common Ministries, an affiliate of Goodwill, and has a nonsectarian mission, welcoming anyone in need.
In 2012, 1,845 households made up of 9,956 people were serviced by the food pantry. Twenty seven percent of clients served by the food pantry in 2012 were under the age of 18, and 45 percent were legally disabled. Nineteen percent were over the age of 60.
The shelves are looking a bit bare right now, just when the need is at one of the highest points.
Thankfully the food pantry has established an Amazon account to allow people to donate with just a few clicks. Orders over $35 ship free.
Won’t you help us spread the word about this crucial need, so that we can make sure all of our neighbors have food on the table this holiday season?
