The Northside Chronicle celebrated its 25th anniversary with a party on Nov. 23 at StarKist Corporate Headquarters, North Shore.
The event, which was intended to thank readers, advertisers and supporters of The Chronicle, showcased the past 25 years of the largest monthly community newspaper in western Pennsylvania.
Attendees also voted for the winners of the 2010 Best of The Chronicle Awards in four categories. A slideshow and Chronicle archive were on display to highlight the changes of The Chronicle and of the Northside.
“The Chronicle wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for all of you believing in our efforts and the efforts of the folks who started this venture,” Emily Leone, managing editor of The Chronicle, said at the event. “The legacy of The Chronicle depends on our readers and supporters who continue to pick up a Chronicle to read on their lunch break or on their commute home, and to those who value a community newspaper.”
Food, drink and other services were donated by a number of Northside businesses, including StarKist, who provided the event space. Music was provided by the Bill Weiner & Charlie Barath duo. The event also was sponsored by the Northside Community Development Fund and the Northside Leadership Conference.
The voting and award portion capped off the evening, with several Northsiders winning in four categories:
- Biggest Newsmaker: Penn Brewery
- Best Photo: Joe Renckly, “Winter on the Mexican War Streets”
- Best Quote: Frank Rossi, Pittsburgh Banjo Club
- Best Print Display Ad: The Priory
In addition, commemorative awards were given to the following individuals for their accomplishments:
- Larry Evans, Founder’s Award
- Derwin Rushing, Advertiser of the Year
- John Canning, Contributor of the Year
- In Memoriam: Mike Coleman, aka “Northside Mike”
