FREE monthly networking and information-sharing event
Co-presented by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the New Hazlett Theater

April 29, 2009
5:30pm - 8:30pm

Venue: New Hazlett Theater - 6 Allegheny Square E.; Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Website: www.newhazletttheater.org

Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, performers, and arts administrators are invited to stop in, enjoy complimentary refreshments and talk about projects, plans, ideas, and interests. Often the key to unique opportunities is discovering who is doing what and interacting regularly with a circle of colleagues who are working creatively.

Artists are an important factor in economic development. Vibrant artistic communities are a draw for tourists, employers and talented employees. This month’s guests are artists who have created their own studio or gallery or are renting space to other artists to support their creative endeavors. They will share their journey and the logistics that go along with such an undertaking.

Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.

Moonshine and SkyToffee is adapted from two quirky, funny and adorable love stories by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, written in the 1940s and set in southern India. While the first story deals with the affection of a young and hard-working man for his landlord's unemployed daughter, the second explores the courtship of Zainaba, a tea shop owner, by the lovable pickpocket, Mandan Muthapa. Watching it all is the unforgettable character of Ottakannan Pokker, Zainaba's one-eyed card-sharping father. Both these stories play themselves out with unexpected twists and turns, all laced with sparkling wit and irrepressible humor. This is its first ever production in the United States.
