Patrons hang out at the new Muddy Cup coffee shop on the corner of East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue. The space, which was a bar, has been extensively redone.

Muddy Cup Coffee

A void (and empty coffee mugs) were filled last week when Muddy Cup Coffee opened its doors on East Ohio Street .

The new coffee shop, with a completely redone interior, occupies the former JR’s Bar at the corner of East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue.

Coffees, teas and a variety of various java creations along with baked goods and snacks are on the menu at reasonable prices. Muddy Cup will have music and poetry nights in the future.

The shop was opened by Renee Tokar, who also owns the Bellevue location.

Muddy Cup Coffee is open 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday.

Brix wood-fired wine bar

Yet another reason to visit Western Avenue: A new lunch-and-dinner spot plans to open at the site of the former Cassis Restaurant.

Brix wood-fired wine bar will feature rustic French and Italian cuisine and will cater to the lunch and dinner crowds as well as vino fans.

The eatery will have a more casual focus, with plates ranging from $4-19, said Paul Tebbets, the owner of Toast! Kitchen and Wine bar in Shadyside. Brix will feature tasting menu options and pairings and will use produce and meats from local farms, Tebbets said.

Tebbets, along with partners Chet Garland and Michael McCoy, have been eyeing up the space for some time. The three bring a combined 50 years of experience in several area restaurants, including Big Burrito’s Soba, Redfin Blues and Nine on Nine.

“My co-owner, Chet, fell in love with the space. It has a great façade, it’s in a great neighborhood, and it’s 90 percent operational,” Tebbets said. “We’re really proud to be a part of the changing dynamics in the neighborhood.”

A soft opening will take place sometime in May at the 900 Western Ave. location. The hours of operation will be 4 – 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 4 – 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday initially. Courtyard seating will be available, weather permitting.
